Following Caribbean Utilities Company’s recent announcement to increase rates by 3.2% in accordance with the rate cap and adjustment mechanism contained in its transmission and distribution licence granted by the Cayman Islands Government, a group of concerned citizens have launched a petition demanding that MPs take immediate action to address the spiralling cost of electricity. The group of citizens is also asking for a path to energy independence via solar usage.
Based on the petition, the group is calling for the following changes:
- Mitigate Cost Burden:
The Grand Cayman Government (our elected representatives) must take immediate action to mitigate the burdensome cost of electricity and provide consumers with viable alternatives for their energy needs.
- Energy Independence:
Allow residents and businesses to install and utilize solar (panel) energy systems without interference or control from CUC, so everyone can have their own power. We have the right to freely use “God’s given energy”—the sun. The recent price increase by CUC has increased the financial burden on our community and taken away the Cayman Islander’s access to “God’s given energy,” while also blocking the use of solar panels.
Regarding the financial pressure residents feel, the group indicated that the Government has a constitutional responsibility to “protect the well-being and livelihoods of its citizens.”
The group is encouraging members of the public to sign their petition to “help create a sustainable, fair, and affordable energy landscape for Grand Cayman.”

The group is also organising a formal protest (date and time to be announced).
