58-year-old Alvin Taylor, trading as “Triple A Construction”, was sentenced in the Summary Court today, December 16, 2024, for failure to effect and continue a standard health insurance contract. He was fined $88,194.78, which he must pay by June 2025.
Based on the discussions during Taylor’s sentencing, it is understood that he was expected to present a statement of means, setting out detailed income and expenditures for his business. This would guide the Summary Court on his ability to pay Taylor’s debts.
Instead, the Chief Magistrate noted that Taylor had only produced a one-page document with nothing to corroborate what was stated in that document.
The Chief Magistrate added that, in the circumstances, Taylor has not assisted the Summary Court and “has been extremely vague, evasive and uncooperative throughout the entire process.”
The Chief Magistrate, therefore, implemented compensation orders as follows:
- Taylor must pay $39,766.59 or face 39 months in prison for non-payment concerning expenses at the Health Services Authority
- Taylor must pay $48,428.19 to Dr James Akinwunmi or face 48 months in prison for non-payment.
The Chief Magistrate noted that Taylor has assets that he can mortgage to pay these debts and gave him until June 27, 2025, to settle the amounts.
