Calvin “DJ Infamous” Donald, the tour DJ for Ludacris, appeared in the Summary Court today, June 2, 2025, to face a charge of importation of a vape pen containing less than two grams of a cannabinol derivative. Magistrate Gunn fined him $1,747.25 and gave him an unconditional discharge for 18 months, meaning that he will serve no prison time if he does not commit another offence in the Cayman Islands within 18 months. Additionally, no conviction will be recorded against him.
Background
Explaining the background of the incident, Defence Counsel Richard Barton said that Donald came to the Cayman Islands on May 30, 2025, on a permit to work at a concert.
Upon his arrival to Grand Cayman, a secondary search was completed by Customs & Border Control Officers. CBC discovered a vape pen lodged in his bag in an area where musical equipment was located.
Based on statements made in court, it was apparent that Donald was unaware of the presence of the vape pen and did not intentionally bring it into the Cayman Islands.
Sentencing
After hearing from Defence Counsel, Magistrate Gunn carefully considered that Donald pleaded guilty to the importation of the vape pen and it was not intentional.
However, Magistrate Gunn explained:
I appreciate that, in the United States, possession of these types of items is perfectly legal and they are widely used.
However, in other jurisdictions, including the Cayman Islands, we have not legalized these products.
Magistrate Gunn added:
I hope you’ve learned your lesson.
You must check and double check your luggage before you use it to travel internationally.
As I say, it is a hard drug and in certain countries that would result in a term of imprisonment.
You’re lucky you’re in the Cayman Islands and not places like Russia … [or] the Far East where people are imprisoned without hesitation.
Magistrate Gunn concluded:
You are a man of good character, which is very, very important because you’ve never been in trouble before.
I am going to conditionally discharge you for 18 months.
Donald was also ordered to pay the cost of the drug testing and investigation.
His passport will be returned to him upon payment of the costs.
