The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning for Bermuda as Hurricane Ernesto is expected to impact the area by Saturday, August 17, 2024.
The centre of Hurricane Ernesto was located near latitude 24.5 North, longitude 69.3 West.
It is currently displaying maximum sustained winds near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 975 mb (28.79 inches).
Ernesto is moving toward the north near 13 mph (20 km/h) and is expected to continue in this general motion today, followed by a slower northeastward or northward motion on Friday and Saturday.
Bermuda is expected to receive four to eight inches of rainfall from Ernesto, resulting in life-threatening flash flooding.
Additionally, the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos Islands, the southeastern Bahamas, and Bermuda are expected to be affected by swells. These swells may also reach the east coast of the United States tonight and continue into the weekend.
