A man appeared in the Summary Court today, June 17, 2025, to face an allegation of gross indecency with a child. The man’s bail was extended with conditions.
Bail conditions
Regarding the bail conditions, the Chief Magistrate ordered that the man must:
*Surrender his travel documents
*Not have any contact directly or indirectly with the child, with the mother of the child, or with anyone connected with the child.
*Live and sleep at the address provided to the court
*Not have any unsupervised access with any child under the age of 18.
*Report to the George Town Police Station on Fridays between 9 am and 6 pm.
In the meantime, the court is waiting for a report from the Department of Children and Family Services.
Reporting restrictions
Due to concerns for the child, the Chief Magistrate imposed a reporting restriction, stipulating that no information shall be published that may directly or indirectly identify the child.
Note to readers
The offence of Gross Indecency is covered by section 134A of the Penal Code. This states:
Gross indecency 134A.
(1) A person who commits an act of gross indecency with or towards a child under the age of sixteen or who incites a child under that age to do such an act with that person or another person commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment for twelve years.
(2) A constable may arrest, without a warrant, anyone the constable reasonably suspects has committed an offence under this section.
