Man Gets 1 Year Imprisonment For Everglo Bar Burglaries. Court Hears That The Man Took Juice & Food To Eat.

A man who battled drug addiction from a young age and was known to live on the beach in Bodden Town was sentenced to one year in prison today, October 30, 2024, for two burglaries at Everglo Bar in Bodden Town. Magistrate Hernandez considered the man’s early guilty pleas and time spent in custody when she handed down the sentence.
Background
As explained by the Crown, the first burglary occurred on May 22, 2024. Reportedly, CCTV footage shows the man entering the premises through a window and attempting to steal the cash pan from the counter. After looking up at the camera, he reportedly ran out without stealing anything.
The second burglary happened on May 27, 2024. The man entered a window and took a knife, food, juice, and a Samsung telephone, which were valued at $370.
How the man was identified
It is understood that the man was initially identified via CCTV footage. Subsequently, he was spotted walking along the road in the community around May 29, 2024. Police were alerted, and the man was arrested.
Court appearances
Reportedly, the man appeared in Court in June and July 2024 and pleaded guilty to the burglaries.
Before sentencing today, Jonathon Hughes, the man’s lawyer, explained that the man struggled since childhood with addictions to alcohol and Ganja. Additionally, he has been addicted to cocaine since age 21. Hughes highlighted how the man’s challenges were exacerbated by his insulin dependency and suffering from diabetes.
Hughes explained that the man had tried to turn his life around, had been in recovery, and had participated in rehabilitation programmes in Cayman, Antigua, and Florida. Reportedly, his recovery was challenging because he experienced drug addiction as a child.
Regarding the burglary, Hughes noted that when the man entered Everglo bar on the second occasion, he took food from the fridge, “put it in the microwave and ate it, took some juice from the fridge and left.”
Hughes added, “In other cases, sometimes he will spend a few hours to get some rest and then leave.”
Hughes concluded by noting that the situation was very “regretful” and that the man had also spent time sleeping on the beach in Bodden Town.

Sentencing
After hearing from Hughes and the Crown, Magistrate Hernandez noted that it was an “unfortunate thing” that the man has had a cycle of offending, going to Northward prison, coming out and reoffending.
She added that the man had a “very unfortunate history as a child, but he’s no longer a child.”
She highlighted that the cycle of going to prison and reoffending shows “correctly that custody does not act as a deterrent” for the man. However, she had to consider a sentence for the protection of society and what message was being sent to society.
After considering all matters, Magistrate Hernandez sentenced the man to one year imprisonment for each burglary, with each sentence running concurrently.
