Jayson Vher Montemayor Nangyo appeared via video link in the Summary Court today, July 1, 2025, to face a charge of overstaying. After Nangyo pleaded guilty, the Chief Magistrate sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment. Upon serving his time, he will be handed over to Customs & Border Control for repatriation.
Background
As explained by Crown Counsel for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, on April 17, 2025, Nangyo was arrested by the Customs& Border Control Migration Unit.
Upon reviewing the immigration system, it was evident that he had been overstaying. An observation was made that there was no legal means for him to remain in the Cayman Islands, his work permit having expired in July 2024.
Sentencing
Speaking on his behalf, attorney John Furniss noted that Nangyo “always admitted the situation,” and he has been in custody since his arrest. He was not ready to be considered for repatriation earlier because his passport was misplaced. Now that his passport has been located, matters can proceed.
After hearing from DPP Crown Counsel and Defence counsel, the Chief Magistrate sentenced Nangyo to three months’ imprisonment. Time in custody will be taken into consideration, and he will be released to CBC.
