Lyndon Leathan Martin appeared in the Cayman Brac Summary Court yesterday, January 30, 2025, to face a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm. Martin pleaded guilty to the charge. He is due to return to court for sentencing on February 27, 2025.
Background
Regarding the background of the incident, crown counsel from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions explained that on the morning of September 4, 2024, police officers responded to a report of an assault on Cotton Tree Bay Road.
Reportedly, the complainant, Jorge Bonilla, told police that he was punched in the face by Martin whilst walking in the area of the Church of God on Cotton Tree Bay Road.
It appears that there was a verbal altercation between the two men. Reportedly, Martin took exception to the words that were exchanged and stepped out of his vehicle to confront Bonilla.
Reportedly, as Bonilla was trying to get his phone out to make a call, he suddenly felt an impact to the right side of his face in the area of his temple near his eye. This was when Martin punched him.
Sentencing
After hearing from crown counsel and Martin (who represented himself), Magistrate Gunn ordered a victim impact report and social inquiry report to be prepared. These reports will assist the court with Martin’s February 27, 2025 sentence.
