Man Pleads Guilty To Taking A Protected Species(A Cayman Parrot) & Trying To Sell It

Kamean Dean Douglas pleaded guilty with an explanation in Summary Court today, October 29, 2024, to taking a protected species, being a Cayman parrot, and offering it for sale.  Both are offences under section 33(1) of the National Conservation Act.

What the National Conservation Act says

Regarding section 33(1) of the National Conservation Act, this states:

33. (1) Subject to subsection (2), a person who, not being authorised or permitted under this Law (a) takes or permits any other person to take a specimen of a protected species; (b) permits any domesticated animal to take a specimen of a protected species; (c) has a specimen of a protected species in his possession or control; or (d) exposes or offers for sale, exchange or donation, or purchases a specimen of a protected species, commits an offence.

Man’s explanation

As noted by the Court, the offences occurred between June and July 2024.

While the man pleaded guilty “with explanation,” no detailed explanation was offered in Court.

Next steps

After pleading guilty with explanation, his bail was extended to December 4, when he is expected to be sentenced.
