National Hurricane Center Signals Possible Tropical Depression For The Caribbean

The National Hurricane Center noted this afternoon, June 26, 2024, that two tropical waves are in the Caribbean or headed towards the Caribbean. One may develop as a tropical depression.

Tropical Wave 1

According to the National Hurricane Center, the first tropical wave is over the central Caribbean Sea, rushing westward at around 25 mph. This system is producing disorganized shower activity.

The National Hurricane Center added that the tropical wave may develop over the next couple of days over the western Caribbean Sea or the southwestern Gulf of Mexico during the weekend.

Data from the Weather Channel also indicated that “this system could dump locally heavy rainfall from parts of Central America to southern and eastern Mexico” and “local flash flooding and landslides are possible, especially in areas of higher terrain.”

The chance of formation through 7 days is low at 20 per cent.

Tropical Wave 2

The second tropical wave is a few hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, according to the National Hurricane Center. The system is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. 

The National Hurricane Center explained that some development is possible during the next several days, and a tropical depression could form over the tropical  Atlantic by the end of the week or this weekend while the system moves westward at 15 to 20 mph. The chance of formation through 7 days is medium at 40 per cent.

Stakeholders in the Caribbean and Central America are encouraged to pay close attention to updates from local radio and other media as forecasts may change at any time.
