The National Hurricane Center reported that it is monitoring three weather disturbances this morning, Saturday, August 31, 2024. Two disturbances are moving towards the Caribbean, while the other is in the Gulf of Mexico.
The system closest to the Caribbean Sea, currently moving westward towards the Lesser Antilles, is a tropical wave expected to develop into a tropical depression next week. The likelihood of formation over the next seven days is considered medium, at 50 per cent.
Following closely behind is another tropical wave in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic, just west of the Cabo Verde Islands. This is projected to move westward to west-northwestward in the next couple of days. The likelihood of formation over the next seven days is low at 10 per cent.
The third system is a broad area of low pressure near the upper Texas coast. This is currently causing disorganized showers and thunderstorms along and just offshore the coasts of Texas and Louisiana. As a result, these areas may experience flash flooding. The likelihood of formation over the next seven days is considered low at 20 percent.
Stakeholders in these areas are encouraged to monitor these disturbances as forecasts may change at any time.
