Today, January 22, 2025, Jermaine Marvin Carney, a Jamaican national, was ordered to be deported on January 23, 2025, after he overstayed in the Cayman Islands.
Sentencing details
Arguing on Carney’s behalf, defence attorney Crister Brady noted that Carney paid a “Mr Peart” $3,000 to apply for a work permit for Carney.
Allegedly, Peart went “AWOL” and Carney was unable to locate him.
When Carney went to the police to report the incident, the fact that he overstayed was discovered.
After considering statements in the Summary Court, the Chief Magistrate noted that usually, a one year term of imprisonment would be applicable to Carney.
However, the Chief Magistrate reduced the sentence because there was no point in keeping Carney as “a visitor at HMP.”
Accordingly, the Chief Magistrate made a deportation order, with the first available repatriation flight being on January 23, 2025.
