The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service reported that a senior politician sustained injuries to his head after the vehicle he was driving collided with the arm of a CAT excavator parked along the roadside on Anton Bodden Drive, Bodden Town. He was reportedly transported to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Concerning the background to the accident, the RCIPS said that shortly before 12:30 am today, August 8, the 9-1-1 Communications Centre received a report that a CAT excavator was parked along the roadside on Anton Bodden Drive, Bodden Town, with the excavator arm extending into the roadway.
Shortly afterwards, it was reported that a vehicle had collided with the excavator arm.
Police, along with the Cayman Islands Fire Service and Emergency Medical Services, attended the location and observed the driver of the vehicle, who had sustained injuries to his head.
The driver was not named but only identified by police as a senior politician.
Police said they attended the hospital but were unable to conduct further inquiries as the driver was undergoing immediate medical care. Meanwhile, the attending physician was requested to take a blood sample for investigative purposes.
Police are also investigating how the excavator’s arm came to extend into the roadway at the time of the collision.
