The National Hurricane Center reported early Friday morning, June 28, 2024, that a third tropical wave formed a few hundred miles south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. It has a trajectory towards the Caribbean.
Tropical wave three, over the Eastern Tropical Atlantic, is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
It may develop early next week while it moves generally westward across the central and western tropical Atlantic at 15 to 20 mph.
The chance of formation is 20 per cent over seven days.
The third wave joins the tag team of tropical waves already forecasted for further development in the Caribbean.
Concerning these, AL94 over the Western Caribbean/Southwestern Gulf of Mexico is moving west-northwestward at around 15 mph and is expected to continue in the vicinity of the northwestern Caribbean Sea or over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico during the next few days. It has a 30 per cent chance of formation.
Right behind it is AL 95, which continues to take shape in the Tropical Atlantic. This is one of two systems that pose a threat to the Windward Islands. It has an 80 per cent chance of turning into a tropical storm or depression over the next two days and a 90 per cent chance in a week. It is moving westward at 15 to 20 mph.
The sudden formation of the third tropical wave reminds us how quickly weather conditions can change and why it is important for stakeholders in the Caribbean and Central America to remain vigilant and prepared.
