Tropical Storm Beryl To Rapidly Strengthen As It Approaches Caribbean. Heavy Rainfall Expected.

The Weather Channel and the National Hurricane Center noted on Saturday morning, June 29, 2024, that Tropical Storm Beryl is intensifying as it approaches the Lesser Antilles.  In front of Tropical Storm Beryl is a development near the Gulf of Mexico. Behind Tropical Storm Beryl is a possible tropical depression.

Regarding Tropical Storm Beryl, the National Hurricane Center said it is near 9.8N 45.5W at 29/0900 UTC or 850 nm ESE of Barbados.

The Weather Channel indicated that Barbados, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, the Grenadines, and the islands on either side of Martinique and Dominica and southward through Tobago and Grenada may be at risk. The Weather Channel added that a hurricane watch is in place for these areas.

Regarding development over the next couple of days, the National Hurricane Center said, “Additional steady to rapid strengthening is expected during the next couple of days, and Beryl is expected to become a hurricane tonight or Sunday.”

Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to initially move westward, then west-northwestward, crossing the Windward Islands late Sunday night and Monday.

Tropical Storm Beryl is projected to cause three to six inches of rainfall in Barbados and the Windward Islands.

Swells and life-threatening surf and rip current conditions are also possible for these areas.

This rainfall may produce localized flooding in vulnerable areas.

Possible Tropical Depression Ahead Of Beryl

AL94

Immediately ahead of Tropical Storm Beryl is AL94 over the Northwestern Caribbean/Southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

AL94 is expected to form into a tropical depression in the next couple of days.

The chance of formation through the next 48 hours is medium at 40 per cent.

Regardless of the chance of formation, the National Hurricane Center said that heavy rainfall may impact portions of Central America and Mexico.

Possible Tropical Depression Behind Beryl

In addition to AL94, the National Hurricane Center reported that a system in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic may form into a tropical depression by the middle of next week while moving generally westward at 15 to 20 mph.

The chance of formation through seven days is medium at 60 per cent.

This system is tracking behind Tropical Storm Beryl.

Stakeholders in the Caribbean are encouraged to pay attention to local weather stations and media and remain storm-ready.
