A Spanish-speaking worker whose work permit has expired was remanded in custody today, October 21, 2026, after his defence attorney, Katie Williams, informed the Summary Court that the young man was highly distressed, “rocking and crying for his mother” in the holding blocks.

The 25-year-old defendant, identified as Mr. Campbell, appeared alongside defence lawyer Katie Williams for an urgent evaluation of his legal and custodial status. Williams raised immediate red flags concerning Campbell’s extreme emotional vulnerability and deteriorating immigration standing.  It was noted that his work permit has officially expired, leaving him with an “on time” status in the jurisdiction.

The proceedings took an unusual turn when Chief Magistrate Hernandez examined the case files, indicating that the allegations related to “housemates arguing about who used whose chicken to cook.” Due to the circumstances surrounding this matter, the court noted that the Crown must urgently engage the assistance of Customs and Border Control officials to investigate the matter.  If the Crown does not explore this option (which may involve deportation), then it may the case that this matter could drag on for long time as psychiatric and other assessments made need to be requested to confirm the man’s mental state and history prior to sentencing.

Further complicating his application for bail, Campbell was unable to communicate his precise residential address to his legal team, telling them only that he resided somewhere within the Savannah district. The court noted that a certified Spanish interpreter would be mandatory before any formal pleas could be safely recorded.

Notwithstanding the deep concerns for his immediate well-being, Chief Magistrate Hernandez refused bail and remanded Campbell in custody until October 22. However, Chief Magistrate Hernandez took the extra step of writing an explicit note, asking Her Majesty’s Prison staff to classify the young man as highly vulnerable and ensure he receives immediate, targeted psychological counselling upon arrival.
