Charles Michael Ebanks, a man who presented a fake $100 bill to Marketplace Supermarket in West End Cayman Brac, was sentenced in the Grand Court today, December 6, 2024, to four months imprisonment, suspended for two years. In addition, Justice Richards ordered him to do 240 hours of community service and pay compensation of $100.
Background
A previous story described the circumstances surrounding Ebanks, including how he was given $100 by someone to go to the supermarket.
According to the Grand Court, Ebanks was described as wilfully blind to the obvious: The $100 was fake. He used the money to pay for cigarettes and root beer.
When it was later discovered that the note was fake, Ebanks denied ever going to the store.
Subsequently, he pled guilty.
Sentencing
During his sentencing today, it was noted that Ebanks was on a two-year suspended sentence for another crime when he committed the new crime of obtaining property by deception with the fake $100 bill. Fortunately for Ebanks, Justice Richards did not activate the suspended sentence.
Having gotten over this hump, Justice Richards said that the starting point for Ebanks’s sentence is 6 months. This was reduced for mitigating factors and his early guilty plea, resulting in a total of 4 months in prison. However, he will not serve any prison time as Justice Richards suspended the sentence for two years.
Ebanks must also complete 240 hours of community service, starting today, within 12 months.
Lastly, he must pay $100 in compensation within 7 days or face one month imprisonment.
