Tourist Avoids Jail Time For Importation Of Cannabis Gummies, Receives Fine

By Alric Lindsay

A man pled guilty today, November 6, 2024, to importation of cannabis gummies into Owen Roberts International Airport. Magistrate Gunn fined him $500, and ordered a payment of $315 in costs to the Crown. In addition, a conviction was recorded.

Before announcing the fine, Magistrate Gunn asked the man whether he had a prescription for the gummies. He confirmed that he didn’t and simply wasn’t aware of the law in the Cayman Islands.

In response, Magistrate Gunn explained that gummies fell into the definition of a “hard drug” and ignorance of the law is no excuse. She added that, since there were no exceptional circumstances, a conviction would be recorded against the man.

Magistrate Gunn then considered the man’s early guilty and his good character. For these reasons, she did not sentence the man to any jail time. However, she ordered that the drugs be forfeited.
