Man Admits Burglary, Trespass And Attempted Tyre Theft But Denies Threat To Shoot; Sentencing In September

A man has pled guilty to a string of offences — including a burglary of construction tools, criminal trespass and an attempt to steal four car tyres — but denied a charge that he threatened to shoot another man. He was remanded in custody to be sentenced in September.

In the Summary Court today, July 30, 2026, Jaquan Joshua Mellard admitted:

• criminal trespass — on March 12, 2026, entering the private residence at Barnett Close, West Bay, without lawful business;
• attempted theft — on the same day, attempting to steal four tyres from a Silver Honda Accord, valued at under $5,000;
• burglary — on March 21, 2026, entering part of a building at 187 Birch Tree Hill, West Bay as a trespasser and stealing tools worth about $1,150;
• resisting a police officer and failing to provide a specimen of urine at the Cayman Islands Detention Centre on April 2, 2026.

He pled not guilty, however, to a charge that on April 2, at Birch Tree Hill, he made a threat to cause serious harm to another man — a threat to shoot him — maintaining his denial of that count.

With the guilty pleas entered, a trial date that had been fixed for September 1 was vacated. The Chief Magistrate ordered a pre‑sentence report, to be prepared whileMellard is in custody, and set sentencing for  September 16.
