Today, July 29, 2026, the Chief Magistrate committed two men to stand trial in the Grand Court on charges including the importation of more than 500 pounds of ganja, about 21 pounds of cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine, a firearm and ammunition, after the Summary Court found there was sufficient evidence for the matters to proceed.
The two accused — named in court as Leon St. Michael Hydes and Deshawn Bailey — appeared at a committal hearing on the following detailed charges:
- importation of ganja — the charge amended to specify the weight at 505.38 pounds;
- importation of cocaine — approximately 21 pounds;
- importation of MDMA (ecstasy) — just under one pound;
- importation of ketamine — just under one ounce;
- possession of an unlicensed firearm — described as a 9mm Luger with a magazine; and
- possession of unlicensed ammunition — various cartridges
Bailey additionally faces a charge of illegal landing.
Having reviewed the papers, the Chief Magistrate found there was sufficient evidence for the matters to be committed to the Grand Court and directed that they proceed there together, along with the illegal‑landing charge, on the basis that the charges are intricately connected. The men were told they will next appear in the Grand Court by video link on August 21, 2026.
No pleas were taken at this stage, and the allegations remain to be tried. Both men are presumed innocent unless and until proved guilty.
