Devon Emmanuel Wright, Jr., appeared in the Grand Court on October 3, 2025, to face allegations of abduction and murder of toddler Alissady Azalea Powell in Cayman Brac. Wright, Jr, pleaded not guilty to both charges. His trial is set for July 20, 2026.
In this highly publicised case, it is alleged that on July 26, 2022, in the vicinity of an apartment on Southside East Road, Cayman Brac, Wright, Jr, by force or by deceit, abducted Powell and murdered her.
While the courts encourage the quick processing of cases involving children, the start of the case will be delayed due to the unavailability of legal counsel and the number of experts expected to be called by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and defence counsel. With eight or nine experts to be called by the DPP alone and defence counsel not having the underlying reports they need to instruct their own experts, this means that the trial will not commence until July 20, 2026. Before the trial date, a case management hearing is scheduled for March 5, 2026.
