Ollen Lester McKenzie appeared in the Summary Court today, July 1, 2025, to face charges of theft, trespassing, and possession and consumption of ganja. He pleaded guilty. Due to concerns about him being in and out of custody, and the issues possibly being related to mental health concerns, it was ordered that he attend a specialist court for assessment on July 2, 2025.

Background

Regarding the first allegation, being attempted theft, on October 6, 2024, McKenzie reportedly attempted to steal items including a bicycle pump from 100 Willie Farrington Drive in West Bay.

McKenzie was also charged with trespassing on the same property.

Concerning the third charge, it was alleged that, on November 28, 2024, McKenzie committed theft by stealing two hammers, an extension cord, two rakes, two shovels, two machetes, one wire brush, and one crowbar. The value of the items was estimated at $1,000.

Regarding the fourth charge, it was alleged that, on January 8, 2025 at the Cayman Islands Detention Centre, he possessed 4.35 ounces of ganja. (It should be noted that McKenzie pleaded guilty with an explanation to this charge as the ganja was reportedly for personal use.)

For the next charge, it was alleged that he consumed ganja.

Regarding the other charge, it was alleged that on May 7, 2025, McKenzie stole three batteries, keys, bottles of water and a microwave, the value being $647.

For the last charge, it is alleged that he trespassed on the above property on McDoom Lane in West Bay.

Mental health concerns

Given that McKenzie has been in and out of custody, concerns were raised about his mental health. Therefore, the Chief Magistrate agreed that he should attend a specialist court on July 2, 2025 for an assessment.
